All Good news & banana gossip

Meet the Mum who fought the corporate giants and changed the world.

29 April 2011 | Posted by simon in All Good News, General

Listen to Radio New Zealand National tomorrow morning, Saturday 30th April, at 8.15.

Harriet Lamb, Director of the Fairtrade Foundation, will be interviewed by Kim Hill on National Radio this Saturday morning. She’ll be talking about her book Fighting The Banana Wars and her battle to make sure the food on our plates, and shirts on our backs, don’t rob people in other countries of the means to feed or clothe themselves.

Harriet became convinced of the importance of Fairtrade while visiting Costa Rica with WDM in 1997 to investigate local banana plantations’ use of pesticides already banned in the US for making farm-workers sterile, she met a woman called Maria whose husband had been exposed to DBCP while working on the plantations. The couple had had a baby boy born with severe developmental abnormalities who died after a short and distressful life.

In her book Harriet describes how “As we sat there and she showed me pictures of her baby rage bubbled up inside me because the companies knew of the dangers of this chemical but they ignored them. I have never, ever forgotten Maria.”

Listen to Harriet’s story tomorrow morning with Kim Hill on National Radio and remember to text in during the show to show your support.

Good one Gary the Gorilla

18 April 2011 | Posted by julia in All Good News, Banana lovers

Now believe it or not, we get quite a few requests from people who are gagging to leap about in a gorilla suit for us. None however, have been as excited or persistent as Gary the Produce Manager at South City New World in CHCH. So to reward such enthusiasm, what could we do but get him his own suit for parading in.

Not an ordinary suit no siree… a lovely bright yellow one.

Gary we salute you.

Tasty

The kids, teachers and parents at Grey Lynn school went bananas this morning.  We took a few boxes along to help raise money for the year 6 school camp and they sold out in minutes.

Thanks Grey Lynn. Good effort.

Carrot-mob? In Wellington?? What the what???

08 April 2011 | Posted by julia in Uncategorized

No this doesn’t involve a mob of people throwing carrots. More a mob of happy people rewarding a business for being toooootally awesome and having great environmental & ethical practices.

A joycott rather than a boycott (love that word, thanks @Conscious Consumers).

Oooh badges yuuus! It's like the Girl Scouts

The past couple of weeks Conscious Consumers have been working with Wellingtonians to select THE best café location. All Conscious Consumers’ cafés were in the running to get mobbed – but there could only be one winner. Following the frantic bidding war started on 21 March 2011, the café that pledged to use the highest percentage of its take from the mob day to improve its energy efficiency won.

Take a bow Memphis Belle, for they pledged 201%!!

It’s going to be NZ’s first carrotmob, so head down there tomorrow Sat April 9th to see the entertainment and be part of the fun.

Follow Consious Consumers facebook page for more information, and if you’re the 42nd carrot-mobber you’ll also get one of our gorgeous tees too.

You could even wave/lob a few carrots if you fancy, but be safe kids. Be safe.

Team Go Banana Go on a stealth test drive

05 April 2011 | Posted by simon in All Good News, Banana lovers

Untitled from Simon Coley on Vimeo.

A sneak preview of the Go Banana Go warm-up to this weekends Red Bull Trolley Derby. Speed is good but judging by the way the banana corners this will be an event with just as many spills as thrills.

Grey Lynn by night

22 March 2011 | Posted by simon in All Good News, Banana lovers

If you’re near the Grey Lynn area this Thursday, then definitely make sure you take a stroll or cycle down to the West Lynn Street Party & Twilight market.

You’ll be able to grab a drink, sample some tasty food and soak up the music and atmosphere. Judging by the video from last year, you’ll be in for family, fun-filled treat.

Oh and make sure you swing by the Fairtrade stall to say hi and pick up a few of our bananas.

More details about the event here.
